Walking in a Wisco Wonderland: walks/runs
Celebrate the outdoors this weekend with a little activity . . .
 
It would seem as though our weekend events are dictated by the weather around here.  This weekend is no different.  It will be a mild weekend, perfect weather to get out for a stroll or jog. 
 
There are two run/walks this weekend that we’d like to feature.  First is the 5K Run for Love on Saturday, May 25th.  It takes place at Fox River Park in Waukesha.  The run starts at 9:00AM and the walk starts at 9:15AM.  The proceeds of this run go toward providing and distributing of water packs for families in Kenya, Africa, something that we take for granted. 
 
My personal pick for the weekend takes place in Racine.  The infamous Color Run takes place on Saturday starting in Pershing Park.  You will want to show up in all white by 8:00AM to hit the streets for this fun run/walk.  If you haven’t had the opportunity to do a Color Run yet, this one is a personal favorite!  Every 1K of this 5K event, you get splashed in paint.  You start the run wearing all white and finish in more colors than you knew existed!                                                    
Have fun and remember, the faster you run the faster you’re done!
 
 
 
Food Glorious Food
Duck Duck Goose…RUUUUUN don’t walk to Bayview’s Odd Duck (www.oddduckrestaurant.com.) This trendy neighborhood brings a new Milwaukee delight that not only fits the style, but the flavor expectations of a restaurant that without reservation can have a 2-3 hour wait on prime nights. And trust me, grab a cocktail…it is worth the wait! Their variety of seasonal small and large plates are designed to be shared…and there are some that once you taste them, you may not want to! Music Madness
If you looking for something to do tomorrow night, love music and it’s for a good cause, then this is it!! ROCK THE HUNGER at the Best Place Historic Pabst Theater at 7:00pm!! Featuring nine of Milwaukee’s best musical groups, the concert is sure to have you dancing into the night. Come out and support the hard work of local music students in addition to the community. Admission to the concert is $7, or just $5 if you donate a non-perishable food item upon entry. All donations directly benefit the Hunger Task Force and those in need this holiday season. Admission to the concert also gives you a chance to win prizes…Also this Friday at the Intercontinental Milwaukee at 10pm, check it out for Free!! Steve Grimm is back! After graduating from the famed Berkley School of Music in Boston he began a musical journey performing countless gigs across the nation and is still performing his much loved music today.

Brewers
Brewers are Home all weekend! They play the Pirates Fri 7:10pm game, Sat 3:10pm and Sunday is Ryan Braun bobble head  day starting at 1:10pm. They welcome the Minnesota Twins to town for Memorial Day game starting at 1:10pm.A few wins are needed, Let’s go Brew Crew!

Lakeshore Chinooks
Check out this promotional video of the Lakeshore Chinooks. The setting looks incredible with Lake Michigan so close to the ballpark. I can’t wait to check out a game there this summer. Season opener is May 30th, more to follow next week.

The summer movie season is fast approaching!  This weekend brings sequels to two very popular movie series.
May 23rd:   The Hangover Part 3:
This time, there’s no wedding. No bachelor party. What could go wrong, right? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off.
A Los Angeles-based story that will deviate from the forgotten-debauchery formula of the first two films. It’s safe to say a reunion between Stu and Jade is on the itinerary.

Unique Milwaukee
St. Joan of Arc Chapel brings European beauty
 
Marquette University isn’t just home to academic excellence and a fantastic basketball scene. In fact, it is also the home of a hidden Milwaukee gem. St. Joan of Arc Chapel, a 15th century French stone chapel (Chappelle de St. Martin), which was moved stone by stone from Chasse, France to Long Island, NY in 1927. In 1964, the chapel was dismantled and presented to Marquette. The chapel contains a stone on which St. Joan of Arc prayed before going into battle against the English 1429.
                This chapel will awe anyone who takes the time to trek to Marquette’s campus to explore its simple European beauty. You can schedule a tour at Marquette University’s Campus Ministry 414-288-6873 or stop in Monday-Friday 10:00am-4:00pm.

Hatch Gives Back!!

HATCH EMBRACES COMMUNITY

When you think of charitable donations, what comes to mind?  Perhaps writing a check to a local non-profit organization, participating in a run/walk or maybe a golf outing is the extent of our community “action”.  While these are important, worthwhile endeavors that should continue, they are also beneficial on a personal level for the participants. It could be in the form of taxable deductions, individual physical fitness or business gain.

At Hatch, we believe giving back is about so much more!

Have you ever wondered who walks Humane Society dogs, visits elderly people that are living without family, volunteers in giving our children food at schools or volunteers at homeless shelters? These are all examples of ways that you can make an impact on your community without giving a dime!  True community action is about sacrificing what we all hold so importantly in our lives…time.

At Hatch, we want well rounded, caring employees who are balanced and fulfilled both personally and professionally.  As a result, we pay our employees up to 20 hours of volunteer time a year – this time doesn’t include efforts and participation in volunteer boards or committees.  This time is strictly dedicated to making a difference in our community.

This week Kristin Adelmund is our Community Action featured employee.  Kristin spent a couple of hours during the day today at her kid’s school.  She had an opportunity to work with another parent, see her kids, their friends and deliver hot lunch with a smile. It is little things like this that make our employees happier, more productive and balanced daily!

Get involved in your community through giving your valuable time to put a smile on an elderly person’s face by listening to them talk or volunteer to walk an otherwise abandoned pet.  The personal rewards you will get back cannot be measured monetarily or physically but rather in knowing that you made something you touched a little brighter.

Monograham, located at 719 Genesee St. in Delafield, is a quaint gift boutique.  They also have a wide variety of greeting cards and paper.  The owner of Monograham is also the Creative Director and Designer of Smock, an internationally renowned paper and invitation company, so the store specializes in personalized items.  At Monograham you can find candles, jewelry (from designers such as B.U. which happens to be one of my personal favorites), baby gifts, greeting cards for every occasion under the sun, gift-wrap, and personalized invitations and stationery. 
Due to a friendly staff and unique merchandise Monograham has become a must stop for me any time I’m in the downtown Delafield area. 
Walking in a Wisco Wonderland: Runs / Walks
It would appear that spring has finally decided to grace us with its presence.  It doesn’t last long in Wisconsin so take advantage of the blue skies and 70 degree weather with some activity outdoors.  Whether you are a runner or walker, there are always activities for you to enjoy throughout the state and this weekend is no different! 
  •  The Habitat for Humanity Home Run/Walk, a 5K is taking place on Saturday, May 18th at Frame Park in Waukesha.  
  •  Run the Bay in Whitefish Bay includes a 5K run or walk along with a kids run also on Saturday. 
What is more Wisconsin than Lambeau Field  This marathon, half marathon, marathon relay, 5K and kids run will give you the opportunity to see Lambeau from a whole different perspective.  Starting on Lombardi Avenue you will get to be a participating athlete as opposed to watching the athletes! 
Music Madness
Alright music fans…..Big weekend!! We a have a little bit of everything for all types of music lovers out there. First thing is first though! Kenny Chesney is coming to Miller Park this weekend and if you love Country Music you have to go see this!! 
This is going to be a party, the park opens at 1pm so tailgating at Miller Park is game on…its going to be fun and crazy for the “No Shoes Nation” coming to town. Cowboy up and get there!
The concert will also feature special guest Eric Church, whose new album “Chief” was selected as “Album of the Year” at the 2012 Country Music Awards!!
Here are two other notables you need to get out and see too! 
The Mystic Crew will be doing a mixture of rock, country and blues covers and originals. Great cover band this weekend on Saturday! Check these guys out!

Now for the final pick this weekend….the Jazz Estate on Murray Street is the best kept secret in Milwaukee. If you want to see some of the best Jazz in the city you have to visit here. Most locals don’t even know it’s here but its pitch black in the place with just lights on performers, like jazz was made to be played. 
This Sunday at 6pm come to the Jazz estate to celebrate the life and music of the legendary Melvin Rhyne. They have a great lineup of musicians coming in to play his music. Sunday are made for Jazz!

 Hey there sports fans!  We have a slow weekend out there.  Never fear, I will have multitude of options soon.  UWM baseball team is in Ohio playing in NCAA qualifier, Brewers aren’t back until Monday, Not Packer time yet(boo), and no Milwaukee wave.  I am deciding to offer the following: Brewers game on Monday night or watching PBA (yes, Professional Bowlers) open practice and Pro-Am in Waukesha on Sunday.  Stay tuned for next week!

For instance, this weekend, on Sunday is Elkhorn Flea Market at Walworth County Fairgrounds, 411 Court St. Elkhorn, WI. Find bargains galore at this one day event from 7:00am – 4:00. Over 500 dealers bring a wide range of merchandise from furniture in the rough to fine refinished, glassware to pottery, advertising to linens, decoys to dolls, and everything else in between.  The pickin’ is great, and so are the people.

Are you brave enough to conquer the Zombie Run? Are you fast enough to survive?!  On Saturday, the Zombies will take over a 5K mud run that begins at 8:30AM at the Waukesha County Fair Grounds.  Over 13 obstacles and Zombies looking to infect, will you become a statistic or will you survive! La Merenda is a popular Milwaukee favorite, so make sure you reserve a table, or get in there early to snag a seat at their bar. La Merenda will take your taste buds on an international tapas tour you won’t soon forget. From Colombian Empanadas to Jamaican Jerk Trout, to Argentinean Style Beef, there is something for everyone! Their menu changes with the seasons and they focus incorporating as much locally grown ingredients as possible.
If you do have to wait a little while for a table, I recommend the Sangria. Hits the spot!

Hot Water Wherehouse Heats Up the Milwaukee Dance Scene
Lake Michigan may still be a little too chilly to take swim in but the temperature is just right to do some dancing at the Hot Water Wherehouse. This bright, contemporarily renovated warehouse on Milwaukee’s Southside is home to numerous social events including dance classes and socials almost every night of the week. Saturday Night Salsa provides its participants with a free lesson starting at 9:00pm followed by a night of fun and rhythm with some of Milwaukee’s best dancers. If you feel like your dance flame may be ignited by Swing Dance, Country Line Dance, or Argentinean Tango then check out Hot Water’s calendar of events to take part in free lessons and dancing socials throughout the week. If you’re a little shy about busting a move, be sure to check out the live music on Tuesday nights which will surely get your feet tapping.

Grab your helmet, and grease your chain…It’s National Bike to Work Week!

6AM comes awfully early when the temperature outside hovers at freezing!  Is it May or is it March?  National Bike to Work Week kicked off at Hatch Staffing Services nonetheless!   

Located blocks from the ever popular Hank Aaron trail a team of five brave souls set out for their Sunrise ride.  Some with borrowed equipment, some rentals, but all armed for safe trails. 

Within minutes of take-off, we had a fallen soldier!  Two near flat tires and a gas station not in sight, the team got creative and used their sales skills to get a garage to open their doors.  Within five minutes, Jay, now known as our knight and shining armor, had us back on the trail, good as new.

The best part of the ride was the refreshment stations set-up along the way.  Thank you to the Urban Ecology Center and Alterra for donating great coffee, pastries and their time to ensure an enjoyable experience to all.

Hatch Runs to Festa Italiana!

Hatch’s Summer of Wellness continued at the 2012 Wheels & Heels Rush on Festa.  This was part of Hatch’s Wellness Challenge with/against FedEx SmartPost.  Both teams qualified for the points that week with the Rush to Festa and the week before with Bastille days.

The 5K race benefits The National Spinal Cord Injury Association of S.E. Wisconsin.

With the beautiful setting of Milwaukee’s lakefront, the event is made up of a one mile run walk and a 5K race.  In addition to the fun and fundraising, participants are given free admission to the fairgrounds.  More info can be found at http://www.spinalcordwi.org/

Festa Italiana celebrates the food, music and culture of Milwaukee’s Italian community.  As they say; “It’s Food.  It’s Family.  It’s Tradizione.”

And it was a special year for Festa.  2012 marked the 35th anniversary of the event.  It was the first of the ethnic festivals to be held at the Summerfest grounds and is one of the city’s most beloved.  And in a city that is firework crazy, Festa boasts some of the finest fireworks you’ll see all summer.

Another highlight of the festival is the Festa Mass.  One can join tens of thousands of participants on the Sunday morning of Festa at the Marcus Amphitheatre for this special mass.  A non-perishable food item gets you into the mass and the festival.  The food donations benefit the Hunger Task Force with the goal of collecting 10,000 pounds of food.

Hatch Storms the Bastille!

Hatch’s ‘Summer of Wellness’ continued with the Storm the Bastille 5k Run at Milwaukee’s Bastille Days.  Created as a way to bring attention and tourists to Milwaukee’s downtown in 1982, Bastille Days has become the largest and one of the most popular street festivals in the city.

The festival takes place in Cathedral Square park and features a forty-three foot tall replica of the Eiffel Tower.  Cathedral Square Park also hosts one of Milwaukee’s summer mainstays, Jazz in the Park.

The Hatch team joined 4,000 other runners in the 5k walk/run.

Kristin said, “We had a great time that night and it was a success.  The people that participated from Hatch were, Eric, Lucas, May, Hannah (intern), Kristin, Lori, Ryann, and Michelle.”

Kristin adds, “It was a lot more humid that we originally thought, but everyone successfully completed the run.”    In addition to the internal team members, a lot of additional family and friends came out to participate with the Hatch Team.

This was the first of the Wellness Challenge runs in Hatch’s competition against FedEx SmartPost.  FedEx SmartPost had a great turnout as well and the two teams got together for some group shots.

Cathedral Square Park was donated by one of Milwaukee’s founders, Solomon Juneau, in 1836.

The park was originally named Courthouse Square and contained the city’s courthouse and jail.  And just as was the case with the Bastille, Milwaukee’s jail was overrun by a mob of 5,000 people determined to rescue Joshua Glover, a runaway slave who was being held there during the Civil War.

Milwaukee’s jail paled in comparison to the imposing Bastille Prison in Paris which was stormed on July 14th, 1789,  and ignited the French Revolution.

Milwaukee’s run has none of those ominous connotations.  It’s a fun way to kick off the festival with lots of wine, food, music and dancing to follow.

Pedal Power!

The summer of 2012 has been a hot one so far, but that hasn’t stopped the Hatch staff from heading outside and getting a little exercise…Milwaukee style!

Hatch on the Scene headed out last Friday night to the Walker’s Point area for a little fun on the Pedal Tavern.  A sort of last hurrah before the next wellness challenge.

The tavern was powered by 16 thirsty folks comprised of a mix of internal staff, clients and friends who set out through the Walkers Point area pedaling with all their might.

Among the stops was O’Lydias which Hatch gives a big thumbs up for great hospitality and food!

Another favorite spot was Georges on 1st and Washington, a really fun tavern where the hospitality is unbelievable!  Here’s Tim Sellner wearing the hat they raffled off to the Hatch group.

And his wife, Beth, won a t-shirt!

Other stops included The Wicked Hop, Screaming Tuna and Zad’s.

Eric Becher, Hatch Sales Director commented on the night, “What a great event!  My wife and I had a blast with the team and would do it again in a heartbeat!”

Many laughs, good music, exercise and drinks were shared by the team.  A good time was had by all and Hatch on Scene gives the Pedal Tavern Milwaukee tour a definite thumbs up!
